#1 OLD MATIS 13’ BLOWGUN AND KIT

Collected by L.L. Baron in 1989 in the Brazilian Amazon

SERIOUS COLLECTORS: ACCORDING TO RENOWNED ETHNOGRAPHIC SPECIALISTS, THIS IS THE ONLY BLOWGUN OF THIS TYPE AND SIZE IN THE UNITED STATES.

I call this the Browning of the Amazon. This beautiful tapered blowgun is covered with a resin sealant and decorated with thousands of fragments of tiny bird shells. The mouth piece is 2” in diameter and the barrel tapers down to only ½”. The kit consists of blow darts, a bowl of Eurare, 2 net bags holding a natural jungle cotton called Kapock, a quiver made of bamboo, a Parinas jaw for sharpening the darts, and the jawbone of a large animal. This is the last and largest blowgun that I have ever seen. It has been in my possession for 20 years. The resin has flaked off in some parts, but it has been well taken care of.

To my knowledge, there are only 235 Matis Indians in existence.

This is, without a doubt, a true museum piece. From LeBaron’s personal collection. Retail value: $12,000.00

 #3Yagua Blowgun

8' x 4" x 1 1/2" dia

Collected by a geologist in the 1970's. I purchased this directly from the deceased man's family in 1997 in El Paso, Texas.

Museum Quality  - Click on picture for more photos!

Yagua is an exotic tribe of Indians who live their most natural lives in the depth of the Amazon jungle within Peru.  The Yaguas speak their own and very difficult language by the same name.  They refuse to learn Spanish and show almost total apathy towards what we call "civilized way of life." Only the chief travels to Iquitos, some 30 miles away and half an hour by speedboat, about once a week, to purchase food stuff and other essentials for the Yaguas. The rest of the tribe stays put.  The Yagua people live along the Amazon River from roughly Iquitos, Peru to Leticia, Colombia.   The Yaguas have been spared the perils of guerrilla conflict, drug trafficking and oil exploration.  The people traveling to pick up these blowguns run the risk of running into guerrilla conflicts and the dangers along the Amazon River. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ended the Mexican War and provided for certain forts to prevent Mexican incursion and/or U.S. intervention (by bandits or hostile Indians) along the Texas-Mexican border. One of the most important forts was Duncan, located at Eagle Pass, Texas, opposite Piedras Negras in Cohuila, Mexico. Many important and well-known officers were stationed at or visited this post, including Robert E. Lee, Zenas Bliss, Ranald S. Mackenzie, John Foulois (father of army aviation). These men, representing U.S. interests on the border, along with their wives and children, survived untold hardships to show our flag to the world and democracy. This book tells their story.

#12 Kuna Indian "Lobster" Stick Art

Fettish Collected by L.L.Baron in 1996

20.5"L x 12.5" W x 10.5" H

This is the most unusual and non-typical piece of Kuna Indian primitive art that I have ever found. This 8-legged piece of drift wood has been used for special ceremonies. The legs have cut off to form an even shape and the back rounded tail has been cut 5" deep x 2.5" diameter. Probably coco beans were burned for an incense in the top of its head.

Out of 16 trips to Panama I have only found one of these. This piece of artwork represents the Indians spiritual ability to see animals in other natural, non-living things. It was common with the Tarahumara many years ago to produce this type of art. In fact, I did find similar examples in 1984-1989 in Copper Canyon, Mexico. To my knowledge, the stick art has disappeared among the Tarahumara. However, I do have three other "fish-like" stick art pieces from the Kuna. This type of art among the Kuna is vanishing fast. MUSEUM QUALITY! MAGNIFICENT! RARE!. From L.L.Baron's personal collection. I have never seen a picture of one of these in any anthropology book.

#15 OLD KUNA INDIAN CEREMONIAL PESTLE with bird on top of unknown animal!

20.25" x 3" deep x 3.5" w

Collected by L.L. Baron in 1995 - San Blas Islands - ONLY PIECE LIKE THIS I HAVE EVER FOUND! Ceremonial hand-carved wooden pestle. This is a medium heavy unknown wood (out of 20 species of trees in the area found) Dried with one large crack down front. Bottom of pestle is worn and deteriorated from age and  much use. A beautiful example of animalistic culture. One is a bird, but I'm not positive what animal (obviously a four-legged creature) is represented under the bird.

#16 OUHIMBA CULTURE BOW AND 6 ARROWS -

SERIOUS COLLECTORS

Kaokoland, Southwest Africa, near Etosha National Park

Collected by L.L. Baron in March of 2007 on 2nd trip to South Africa

Bow is 63" L x 1.25" thick - The 6 arrows average 31" long

Hand-forged metal points - exact age unknown but probably about 100 years old. Larry purchased this set from another trader in Durban, South Africa, and was told that this is from West Africa, now known as Nabia. He drove through the entire country of Nababia 19 years ago. Most of the artifacts like this were gone! This set features unique fletching! Notice the notch of the arrows - very different! Some of the arrows are fletched with six feathers and the work on them is extremely tight. Each metal arrowhead is hand-forged.
