#244 Antique Chinese Cloisonne Vase

These hand-crafted Chinese Cloisonnes are a testimony to the splendor of the imperial court. Beautiful and delicate, yet sturdy, they symbolize the timeless beauty of fine art. Chinese Cloisonne is also called "Enamel with copper roughcast and inlayed copper wire" abbreviated for Enamel and usually called cloisonne. Chinese Cloisonne is a kind of artwork made of red copper roughcast and decorated colorful glaze. It was well known in the time of Jingtai of Ming Dynasty (1450--1456) for the most exquisite production.

#245 Ebony Display Stand

6 1/4" Dia x 4"H  Collected by L.L. Baron 2/2010 in Qingdao, China

Gaboon ebony wood is the most pure black of the lot, but can have occasional chocolate brown seams, especially in the middle of larger chunks. You can pay significantly more for wood that is guaranteed to be pure black throughout. The sap wood is a light gray offering extreme contrasts in colour that can add dramatic flare to small turning projects like pens and bottle stoppers.

Ebony is one of the most intensely black woods known, which, combined with its very high density (it is one of the woods that sink in water), fine texture, and ability to polish very smoothly, has made it very valuable as an ornamental wood.

BRITISH SOLDIER'S UNIFORM w/mannequin

Collected by Richard Thompson in the early 1960's in England, while researching the Battle of Isandlwana and Rorkes Drift

Complete with the coveted Silver Sphinx medals attached to each side of the collar. This full size mannequin (included in bidding) supports a reproduction of a British soldiers 24th-Foot Uniform from the period of the Zulu Wars. The two medals on the left pocket are not authentic; however are good reproductions. The pistol holster holds no firearm. To see uniforms exactly like this one, view "Zulu Dawn" and "Zulu. This uniform is in good condition complete with the helmet, which is a little dirty and could use a good cleaning. Further research has determined that the buttons on this jacket were not in circulation until 1902-1934, proving that this uniform is a reproduction, made approximately between1950 and 1960  - the helmet was made in Zululand probably during the same time period (see pictures). Oddly enough, the leather holster is authentic British Military issue. According to those who performed the research, this is a very good quality replica of the original with attention given to the smallest of details  - probably made for a museum or military reinactments during the late 50's or 60's and still has considerable value for someone who collects and displays uniforms. For this reason, we are dropping the price drastically and will accept any serious offer.

New UPDATED Information (from a museum Curator of Collections) - it is very (90%)probable that this uniform was worn in the movie "Zulu" starring Michael Caine produced and filmed in 1964,

The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ended the Mexican War and provided for certain forts to prevent Mexican incursion and/or U.S. intervention (by bandits or hostile Indians) along the Texas-Mexican border. One of the most important forts was Duncan, located at Eagle Pass, Texas, opposite Piedras Negras in Cohuila, Mexico. Many important and well-known officers were stationed at or visited this post, including Robert E. Lee, Zenas Bliss, Ranald S. Mackenzie, John Foulois (father of army aviation). These men, representing U.S. interests on the border, along with their wives and children, survived untold hardships to show our flag to the world and democracy. This book tells their story.

#172 OLD MATIS 13’ BLOWGUN AND KIT

Collected by L.L. Baron in 1989 in the Brazilian Amazon

I call this the Browning of the Amazon. This beautiful tapered blowgun is covered with a resin sealant and decorated with thousands of fragments of tiny bird shells. The mouth piece is 2” in diameter and the barrel tapers down to only ˝”. The kit consists of blow darts, a bowl of Eurare, 2 net bags holding a natural jungle cotton called Kapock, a quiver made of bamboo, a Parinas jaw for sharpening the darts, and the jawbone of a large animal. This is the last and largest blowgun that I have ever seen. It has been in my possession for 20 years. The resin has flaked off in some parts, but it has been well taken care of.

To my knowledge, there are only 235 Matis Indians in existence.

This is, without a doubt, a true museum piece. From LeBaron’s personal collection.

#83 Kuna Indian "Lobster" Stick Art

Fettish Collected by L.L.Baron in 1996

20.5"L x 12.5" W x 10.5" H

This is the most unusual and non-typical piece of Kuna Indian primitive art that I have ever found. This 8-legged piece of drift wood has been used for special ceremonies. The legs have cut off to form an even shape and the back rounded tail has been cut 5" deep x 2.5" diameter. Probably coco beans were burned for an incense in the top of its head.

Out of 16 trips to Panama I have only found one of these. This piece of artwork represents the Indians spiritual ability to see animals in other natural, non-living things. It was common with the Tarahumara many years ago to produce this type of art. In fact, I did find similar examples in 1984-1989 in Copper Canyon, Mexico. To my knowledge, the stick art has disappeared among the Tarahumara. However, I do have three other "fish-like" stick art pieces from the Kuna. This type of art among the Kuna is vanishing fast. MUSEUM QUALITY! MAGNIFICENT! RARE!. From L.L.Baron's personal collection. I have never seen a picture of one of these in any anthropology book.

KUNA INDIAN CEREMONIAL DOLPHIN

DRINKING GOURD

Collected by L.L. Baron in 1999-2004 - 6"D x 3"H

This is an old ceremonial drinking gourd. It is very difficult to photograph. However, if you look close you can see three perfect dolphins. The art work is beautiful and the vessel seems to burst with movement! This is only one piece of my Kuna Dolphin collection. Others are now on the web. This is true primitive art in motion. It was used during ceremonies while sharing Chi Chi. Another example of animism.

#107 EMBERA INDIAN COCOBOLA STAFF from Panama

40"L x 2.25" thick - 3#

Collected by L.L. Baron in 2008

This is a very heavy "walking stick". It is similar to the Kuna Authority staffs but this one is not old. Cocobala wood is extremely dense, heavy and expensive. Rarely do you see anything made of it because while attempting to cut it you will burn up a diamond saw blade.

Yourba Talking Drum - See Nigeria Today, Vol. 9, Nos 11 & 12 of 1966 - page 9 "It is the drum that turns music into words and words into Music." That is how Chief Laoye, Baba Kekere of Ede and a veteran drummer, describe the talking drum. Music is an important element of the life of the people of Nigeria and as a result the drum serves a thousand and one purposes. This drum is a dundun (mother of the drums) and is the most important drum. It is played by the head drummer, and takes the lead and dictates the pace and nature of the music. It is shaped like a narrow barrel whose infrastructure is a hollow dumb bell-shaped wooden frame. This particular drum is an original as seen in the following picture. Retail Value: $650.00

#100 OUHIMBA CULTURE BOW AND 6 ARROWS -

SERIOUS COLLECTORS

Kaokoland, Southwest Africa, near Etosha National Park

Collected by L.L. Baron in March of 2007 on 2nd trip to South Africa

Bow is 63" L x 1.25" thick - The 6 arrows average 31" long

Hand-forged metal points - exact age unknown but probably about 100 years old. Larry purchased this set from another trader in Durban, South Africa, and was told that this is from West Africa, now known as Nabia. He drove through the entire country of Nababia 19 years ago. Most of the artifacts like this were gone! This set features unique fletching! Notice the notch of the arrows - very different! Some of the arrows are fletched with six feathers and the work on them is extremely tight. Each metal arrowhead is hand-forged.

Mata Ortiz  pottery, or Casas Grandes , is one of the finest and most innovative ceramics in the world.

Led by Juan Quezada, the entire pueblo of Mata Ortiz creates outstanding handmade, coiled pots or ollas, following centuries old  methods.
Inspired by the Paquime, Casas Grandes ceramics, the potters of Mata Ortiz create contemporary works of art, often incorporating Mimbres designs shared by the Southwest, Native American cultures.
With an olla as their canvas, the potters of Mata Ortiz have imprinted in them not only re-creations of ancestral symbols, but they have searched within their own spirit and creativity and have been  able   to conceive a unique artistic language, creative and original. They have gone through the imitation of pre-Hispanic ceramics, and have moved on to a sophisticated creation of contemporary art.
